Step 1 · Before you scan

Open everything
first.

  • Every door open before you start — smoother scan, better measurements
  • Closets open — slowly in owner-occupied homes, and reassure them: floor plan only, no pictures
  • Utility doors open so the plan labels them; cabinets don't matter
  • Carry door stoppers — some doors swing shut on their own
  • Crews still working? Floor plan FIRST — it tolerates people, photos don't
  • Backyard: skip it — unless it's an ADU or a tiny enclosed condo yard

The one thing to get right

Pick a wall.
Follow it home.

Left or right, it doesn't matter — commit to one wall and trace it through the entire house. You'll never miss a room and never re-scan one, which is what breaks the app's calculations and wastes your time.

  • Open-concept exception — following the wall orbits you around an island, so circle back for it
  • Never enter crawl spaces
  • Small house ≈ 2 minutes — one real scan clocked 1:55

Step 2 · Crash-proofing

One phone call
kills the scan.

  • Airplane mode or Do Not Disturb — a call mid-scan can crash the app and lose everything
  • No music, no other apps — they crash big scans
  • Newer phones crash less, but any phone can crash
  • Phone vertical — faster and more accurate than holding it flat
  • Baseboards in view and you're fine; tip down only in tight spots
  • Start anywhere — it does not have to be the front door

Step 3 · The houses that aren't simple

The calls that
trip people up.

  • ADU or garage near the house? Include it in the SAME scan
  • Tiny enclosed condo yard? Scan it like another room — laundry out there too
  • Tiny closets still need a pass so they appear on the plan
  • No cell service? Save for later, order it from Wi-Fi — nothing is lost
  • Someone in the room? Work around them; the app infers a closed room from the rest
  • Note the photo traps — entry half-baths and laundry doors shoot CLOSED later
