One wrong scan,
you redo everything.

A whole Matterport job on one page: where to put the camera, how to stay out of frame, marking windows and mirrors so the model stops hallucinating, and the upload settings that matter.

Step 1 · Before the first scan

It's still
a camera.

  • Clean the lens — same ritual as the main camera
  • New job → address → name the model the address
  • Insta360 route: connect to the camera's Wi-Fi and expect it to drop; re-enter the password and carry on
  • Close the front door before you start — ask first so nobody gets locked out
  • Level the camera on a Pro 3 or any rotating rig; crooked camera means a crooked model
  • 360 sticks self-level and run about 2× faster than a rotating head

The rule

The mistake that ruins tours

Space them out.
Except at doorways.

Too many scans costs you time and punishes the viewer — a maze of dots confuses people, and older buyers already dislike Matterport. But doorways are the exception: scan just before and just after every one, or you get invisible-wall glitches that break navigation.

  • 5–10 ft per scan, in straight lanes along the natural walking path — no zig-zag
  • Add connector scans at junctions so every route through the model is walkable
  • Placement is still photography — frame the scan like a shot instead of dropping it randomly

Step 2 · Nobody should see you

Reflections,
shadows, people.

  • Check reflections before every scan — windows, glass cabinets, oven doors
  • Check your shadow too — it leaks around the corner you're hiding behind
  • Rotating rig trick: face the lens away, trigger as you walk off, hide while it turns

Step 3 · Teach the model what's real

Mark windows.
Mark mirrors.

  • ONE long window line per glass wall — not window by window; it tells Matterport nothing exists past that plane
  • Do it once the model has taken shape — marking while scanning just doubles the stress
  • Unmarked windows let people measure the outdoors by accident
  • Mirrors must be marked or the model invents a phantom room behind the glass
  • Arrows face into the room — both markers have a front
  • Black spots on the minimap mean missing data — walk the camera back in and rescan

Step 4 · Finish and deliver

The 360
and the upload.

  • Garage: scan the house with the door closed; an empty garage takes one scan at the entrance and one in the middle
  • Backyard: skip the full scan — one well-placed 360 that sees everything is enough
  • Place 360s by hand — drag onto the map and rotate to line up with the house
  • Upload: AI furniture removal is fine, detect floors on
  • NEVER enable Blur Faces — it blurs sculptures, pets, artwork
  • Deliver: copy the model link into the listing and name it Matterport or Zillow 3D Tour
